Diversity can be an enhancing factor in a nation, but there still has to be a unifying force which supersedes ethnic identity. In the United States, that has been the philosophical notion of unalienable rights and self-government under the Constitution. Without that unifying force, ethnic diversity for its own sake is fractious.
